Thoroughly Modern Millie

This is, hands down, no questions asked, my favourite film. And unfortunately one that not many people know about. My grandma introduced it to me as her favourite about five years ago now. Whenever I'm feeling down, this is the movie that will instantly cheer me up.

Millie (Julie Andrews) is a Modern. Determined to marry her boss, she has tossed her cares and curls away in 1922 New York. She quickly befriends Miss Dorothy (Mary Tyler Moore), a wealthy girl who is all alone in the world hoping to become an actress.

They meet Jimmy (James Fox) at the friendship dance where he whips out some wicked moves in the Tapeoka. This bit alone is why I love the movie so much :) Video here.

And although Millie is wooed by Jimmy, she is still determined to marry her boss. Whoever that may be. After all, Jimmy only works with paperclips.

Millie hits the jackpot in her search for the perfect boss/husband: Trevor Graydon (John Gavin).

Before being whisked off to a weekend away with Jimmy and Miss Dorothy to meet Muzzy (Carol Channing) and love advice.

No story is complete without The Bad Guy. Meet Mrs. Meers (Beatrice Lillie). Sad to be all alone in the world, isn't it?

Beethoven's Fifth

It was wonderful to watch the sky change, eat absolutely delicious goodies baked by the wonderful boyfriend and listen to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra perform (for free) at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl on Saturday evening.

We were perfectly perched atop the hill. Wonderful views and a lovely sky to watch as the music played.

A wonderful surprise of delicious desserts baked by Lover Boy. L-R: Chocolate white chocolate chip cookies, with chocolate icing and hazelnuts; soft cookies with melted marshmellows with drizzled melted chocolate and finally a mixture of strawberry flavoured mini cupcakes and choc chip cookies. These babies will be worthy of their own post I think :)

We both concluded that the second song from the start and the second from the break were our favourites of the evening.

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra @ Sidney Myer Music Bowl

February has arrived! And that means the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. Free of charge. All you have to do is bring a picnic rug!

I have intended to go every year for the last five years. And every year I have either a) forgotten, b) been too busy, or c) lacking company and/or energy to go.

I am determined it will be different this year.

Flash Dance

Ah, the wonders of the internet!

So I've seen all the Flash-Freeze-Mobs all over the internet, but until tonight I'd never seen the dancing ones. And let me tell you, they are soooo much better!

Personal favourite so far, mainly because of the variety of dance moves and music used.




I love this one for all the nut-huggers involved, all the young and old dancing joining in and just the wonderful happy and brave carefree attitude it holds.




I can just imagine Sound of Music going down well at a train station in Australia. I love the looks on everyone's faces, particularly the older ladies with their mouths just hanging open :)




How awesome are they?!? And you can't say that they don't make you smile :D
