Mermaids On Stranger Tides

I love mermaids and love stories. So it was kind of inevitable that I would enjoy the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie. I only wish that the mermaid love story was the main story of the film.

As mermaids, they looked gorgeous. I've searched for a decent picture of the mermaid costume, but can't find anything quality yet. Below you can see some of the costume detail.

The crazy vampire frenzy feeding session mermaid bit though? Not so good. Ridiculous even.

I think they could have been more haunting if they just quietly slipped the men into the water and just kept pulling them down. Less hissing that way, too.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is good. The same easy entertainment film that the others have been. I really enjoyed it, especially with the mermaid factor. Definitely worth seeing if you're in a movie mood :)

I hope this will open up the gateway for more mermaid films. *fingers crossed*

You Highness.

We went to see Your Highness last weekend. I had it in my mind that the film would be one similar to Stardust (2007); fun, adventurous and a bit more of a modern and adult fairytale. The trailer looked fun enough!

And with leads including Natalie Portman, Zooey Deschanel and James Franco, I was really looking forward to it. Danny McBride (the main character, Thadeous) is apparently a comedian, but I don't know anything about him beyond this movie.

While it did have some funny bits, the film did not fulfill my expectations. At all. For starters, it's a stoner film. The humour delivered was more of the crude teenage boy variety for the most part. I was hoping for quirky, harmless laughs and a few jeers at the fantasy genre. Occasionally they were there, but most of the time they were not.

Sometimes the pace of the film felt slow, and the pinnacle of the film (fighting the bad guy, as always) wasn't as tremendous as I felt it should have been. I like the modern language and such with the medieval costumes and fairytale nature of the story, but it became a little lazy at times too.

Beyond that, Isabel (Natalie Portman) was wayyy out of Thadeous' (Danny McBride) league. The cast seemed to clunk and clash rather than gel together smoothly. I love Natalie Portman and Zooey Deschanel, but they are both too good for this movie. James Franco is a bit of goofy fun, so he can stick around, but the leading ladies weren't right.

On the positive side? James Franco looked good. As did Natalie Portman. Courtney (Rasmus Hardiker, above left) was my favourite for a laugh.

Maybe if I went in with different expectations I would have enjoyed it more? I'm not sure. Wait to see it on DVD. Even then, rent it. Only if you really really really want to see it.

Cheri

I have just finished watching Cheri (2009). I remember it failing to recieve much love in the cinemas when it came out, so I didn't expect a lot out of it. I loved it. Deliciously beautiful.

I loved the fashions, the drinks in the greenery, the witty dialogue. Reflecting on it, the plot wasn't fantastic but it was so easily watchable and enjoyable. I really enjoyed it.

The above has to be my favourite outfit of Michelle Pfeiffer's many in the movie.

Felicity Jones was simply stunning too.

Such beautiful colouring throughout the film. I could happily live in any of the places shown.

Definitely worth checking out, if only for the visual pleasures :)

Look alikes.

The other day I was told I look like Lily Allen. I was baffled. I think I look nothing like her. She is gorgeous, but there is no resemblense.

I'm more accustomed to being told I look like Laura Prepon.

And Mr. Boy loves that I look like Tina Majorino.

And once or twice being paid the compliment that I look like Claire Danes.

Never Lily Allen though.

No complaints though :) All are beautiful ladies.

Henry Cavill

I have a serious crush on Henry Cavill. And I'm not one for serious celebrity crushes. The last one was on Clive Owen, many moons ago (Obviously, I have a thing for British men).

I have loved him in The Tudors as Charles Brandon, and have gone back to watch Stardust (2007) many a time just to check if that really is him under all that make-up as Humphrey. Now, he appears to be heading for the Big Time. He is going to be the next Superman. I'm no where near a fan of Superman, but I am a fan of this guy, his career and the potential for him to take some clothes off in front of the camera ;)

Mr. Darcy

A night of Pride and Prejudice (the BBC version, naturally) with chocolate and ice-cream. It only seems fitting, since spunky Colin Firth has been awarded his first Golden Globe in the past week.

Perfect way to end the week :)

Always a stunning beauty, she shone in this gorgeous emerald gown. Everything is right. Her hair, her dress, her jewelry. I'm green with envy (oh yeah, you love a pun!)

Stunning on Modern Family (which I love!) and even more stunning in this lovely gown. Such a beautiful colour palette. Gorgeous hair-do too :)

Scarlett Johansson

Another nude colour love. I think if I went to the Golden Globes, this would be the dress I'd wear. I love the sparkle, I love the sleeves, I love the train and shape. In searching for pictures, I read some non-love for her hair-do, but I think it looks great with the dress :)

Rose without thorns

I have begun to watch my beloved Tudors. Season 4 is the final season (*cries inside*) and begins with the flighty and frivolous Catherine Howard. At the end of Season 3, I already hated the stupid Catherine Howard, but now I find myself warming to her.

I believe if I were to suddenly and unexpectedly became queen, I'd carry on like her. I'd giggle away everything, enjoy every splendor the wealth and status brought with it.

Already, Season 4 is more visually beautiful than ever. I'm so excited!

Nonsuch Palace

I'm currently re-watching the last few episodes of The Tudors Season 3 in preparation for my watching of Season 4. I loved Joss Stone as Anne of Cleeves. Giving her up for the giggling Catherine Howard (Tamzin Merchant) is going to be hard.

I loved these final scenes though. I only wish Nonsuch Palace survived history! I know Blogger will kill the beautiful colours in Henry's (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) clothes, but they truly are a wonderful rainbow.

And now to Season 4! Horrah!

The Young Victoria

Let me continue on with my Emily Blunt love. She is stunningly beautiful and classy, as seen in Foyle's War and Gulliver's Travels. And my love for her acting and beauty continues into The Young Victoria (2009).

The whole cast of The Young Victoria is fantastic. I love Mark Strong (who starred as Septimus in Stardust), Miranda Richardson (Queen Mab in Merlin), Paul Bettany (Master and Commander, A Beautiful Mind) and gorgeous Rupert Friend.

However, I feel that the plot of the film is... lost. It seems to attempt to focus on so many different things, but in doing so, it loses itself. I admire the characterisation of Victoria as a strong, independent feminist before her time. The love story is sweet. The rivalry and challenges between Victoria and Sir John Conroy is a fantastic power struggle.

If it is meant to be a love story, which with the way the film ends, I think is cut short. I would have loved to watch out the relationship between Victoria and Albert grow, as I have with The Duchess and Marie Antoinette. I like watching lives. Perhaps they'll make a sequel?

Costume-wise... The dresses are lovely, as you can see. The hair styles... seem dowdy and awkward to me. And unlike with Marie Antoinette, I feel no need to mimic Victoria's hair styles. I do love the constant use of fresh flowers in Victoria's hair, dresses and hats. It brings an extra bit of freshness to the whole appearance.

It's worth watching for the beauty of it all, but I do feel robbed of the potential of a fantastic story.
